You will need a case for it because the Raspberry PI is just the board itself. I recommend a cooling case because the PI can get quite hot and it will degrade its performance to cool down.
Many distros are available for the Raspberry Pi, including Ubuntu, Manjaro, Apertis, and RetroPi. PS In a new post I described how I updated this setup by adding another container called watchtower.
